Clear Signing

When someone signs a contract call, their wallet can only show what it knows how to decode. Without help, that is a function selector and a string of hex, and the person signs blind. ERC-7730 fixes that with a standard JSON file, a descriptor, that tells a wallet how to show a call as an intent with labeled, formatted values: “Unwrap WETH, Amount 1.5 WETH” instead of 0x2e1a7d4d….

On 12 May 2026 an Ethereum working group of wallet developers, security firms and the Ethereum Foundation’s Trillion Dollar Security initiative launched Clear Signing as four pieces:

  • ERC-7730, the descriptor format.
  • A registry of descriptors, ethereum/clear-signing-erc7730-registry, hosted by the Ethereum Foundation as a neutral steward, which anyone can mirror.
  • Attestations under ERC-8176, a draft standard built on the Ethereum Attestation Service, in which an independent reviewer signs a claim about one exact descriptor.
  • Libraries in TypeScript and Rust for wallets and for descriptor authors, listed on clearsigning.org.

A descriptor travels beside a transaction rather than inside it, so contracts that are already deployed can be clear-signed without changing them. Each wallet decides which registries and which reviewers it trusts.

  1. Verify the contracts on Sourcify. The registry checks descriptors against verified ABIs, so a contract that is not verified on Sourcify comes first.

  2. Write a descriptor for each contract. See Anatomy of a descriptor.

  3. Check it. The official linter checks the schema and the ABI, and a test for each function, built from a real transaction, checks what a wallet will show. See How a descriptor is checked.

  4. Submit it to the registry. After it is merged, reviewers can attest it. See The registry and attestations.

  5. Keep it current. A new function, a changed ABI or an upgraded proxy can leave a descriptor describing a contract that no longer exists.
